Key Stage 3
Rationale
To develop pupil creativity and ability to critically reflect on their own and the work of others. To research the Historical context of Art and explore a range of movements and skills. To explore how art and design is linked to a range of careers and embed an aspirational culture within the classroom. To develop independent working and confidence in their own abilities. Pupils are introduced to the work of a range of artists, designers, crafts, movements and cultures throughout the three years as the entirety of the core principles are taught.
Intent
Each year of study within Art, Design and Craft explores the core principles of; research, recording, evaluating and analysing, experimenting and creating. The content progressively becomes more complex and encourages critical thinking and understanding of the possibilities for Art, Design and Craft. pupils are introduced to art as a rigorous subject within year 7 through the research of formal elements, a variety of traditional and contemporary artists and touch upon key movements within the history of art. This is expanded and developed through year 8 and into Year 9 where pupils are taught to engage with sustained observations, a skilful approach to the refinement of practical applications of media and a critical understanding of art and how it can be used to both convey a context and the diverse possibilities for future employment in the creative industries.
Implementation
Pupils study the core principles outlined below throughout KS3.
Research | The work of artists, designers, crafts people, film makers and sculptors is researched.
The historical context of art is explored and pupils develop their understanding of the historical and cultural development of art and its contribution to and potential within the creative industries. |

Rationale
To embed pupil creativity and ability to critically reflect on their own and the work of others. To apply their research into the Historical context of Art and explore a range of movements and skills. To explore how art and design is linked to a range of careers and embed an aspirational culture within the classroom. To refine independent working and confidence in their own abilities to create – the highest of blooms hierarchical thinking skills.
Intent
Each year of study within Art, Design and Craft explores the core principles of; research, recording, evaluating and analysing, experimenting and creating. The content progressively becomes more complex and encourages critical thinking and understanding of the possibilities for Art, Design and Craft. pupils now engage with art as a rigorous practice engaging with sustained observations, a creative and adventurous as well as skilful approach to the refinement of practical applications of media that sees the emergence of their unique style. Independently they explore themes that allow for a purposeful and critical understanding of art and how it can be used to both convey a context and the diverse possibilities for future employment in the creative industries.

Impact
The impact will be pupils who are confident with their creativity. They will have the ability to work independently and take risks when exploring possibilities within their own creative process. They will be resilient learners who realise the potential for sustained engagement and experimentation with a variety of media and techniques. They will have an understanding of the position of art in shaping the world we live in and its potential to enrich, which will at best engage a desire to pursue the arts further into further education or employment into the creative industries.
